Tingling is a sensation, not a reliable measure of benefit. You do not need burning, peeling or visible irritation to prove that skincare is effective. If an optional cosmetic repeatedly causes discomfort, it is reasonable to stop and reassess it.
What exfoliation does
Exfoliation removes cells from the outer surface. Mechanical methods use friction, such as a scrub or tool. Chemical methods use ingredients such as alpha or beta hydroxy acids. Exfoliation is optional, and the method and frequency need to suit the person and the rest of the routine. S38
Dry flakes do not always mean that more exfoliation is needed. They may reflect a routine that is already too irritating or a condition that needs assessment. Scrubbing harder can turn a cosmetic concern into a more uncomfortable one.
Look for hidden duplication
You might use an acid cleanser, an exfoliating toner and a resurfacing serum without thinking of them as three exfoliating steps. Read the product descriptions and directions together. Also consider retinoid or acne treatments, which can increase the risk of dryness and irritation when combined with additional exfoliation. S38
Before adding another step, make a simple list of products that promise peeling, resurfacing, polishing or exfoliation. You may already have more overlap than you intended.
There is no universal schedule
"Twice a week" is not a rule that suits every exfoliant, concentration or skin. Follow the specific directions and avoid treating frequent use as a goal. If your skin is currently stinging, cracked or visibly irritated, do not use that moment to increase an optional exfoliant.
For deeper skin tones or skin that develops dark marks after irritation, avoiding overly aggressive treatment is particularly relevant. The aim is not to trade temporary smoothness for a new problem. S38
Take sun protection seriously
Some alpha hydroxy acid products can increase sensitivity to the sun during use and for a period after stopping. The US FDA advises sun protection while using such products and for a week afterwards. This is a safety point about the ingredients, not a statement about Indian labelling law. S48
A hydrating moisturiser cannot replace sunscreen. Check instructions for all products in the routine, and do not assume that an exfoliant marketed for nighttime use has no daytime implications.
What to do when a product stings
The American Academy of Dermatology advises stopping an irritating non-prescription anti-ageing product rather than treating burning or tingling as evidence of success. For a prescribed product, ask the prescribing clinician how to respond to discomfort. S43
Do not attempt to neutralise a reaction with another acid, baking soda or a home-made mixture. If there is a significant or persistent reaction, seek advice. Rapidly worsening symptoms, blisters, discharge or increasing pain need prompt attention. S09
Choose your next step deliberately
If your basic routine is comfortable, you may decide that you do not need exfoliation. If you do want it for a specific cosmetic goal, introduce one suitable product carefully and keep the rest of the routine understandable.
A stronger sensation is not a better result. A useful skincare step should earn its place through appropriate benefit and tolerability, not through how much you can endure.
