Teen skincare should make everyday care easier, not turn normal skin into a project that needs constant correction. Pores, occasional spots and changes in oiliness are not personal failures. A routine can be useful without aiming for a filtered or poreless appearance.

Build a small foundation

Dermatology guidance for young people starts with gentle cleansing, moisturiser as needed and sun protection. Harsh adult anti-ageing routines and multiple strong actives are not an automatic next step. Hormonal changes during adolescence can affect oiliness and acne, but skincare should respond to actual needs. S29

If your face is comfortable with a simple routine, you do not need to add a serum because friends use one. There is also no requirement to use products labelled for a particular gender. Choose according to how your skin feels, the directions and any professional advice you have received.

Make it fit school and activities

Think about when the routine can realistically happen. Keep basic products somewhere easy to use. For sport, use suitable sun protection and deal gently with sweat; rubbing your face repeatedly with a towel can be irritating. Change out of damp sports clothing when practical. S32

You do not need to carry a full shelf of skincare to school. A short routine at appropriate times is easier to maintain than a complicated set of steps that becomes another source of stress.

Acne needs a separate conversation

A moisturiser can support comfort, including when acne treatments cause dryness. It is not a substitute for treating acne itself. Look for a suitable non-comedogenic product if you are acne-prone, and follow the directions of any treatment you have been given. S37

Do not use a friend's prescription, combine several spot treatments impulsively or assume that burning means a product is effective. If spots are painful, leave scars or dark marks, persist, or affect confidence, ask a parent or trusted adult to help arrange appropriate advice. Seeking help early is reasonable; you do not have to earn an appointment by trying every trend.

Be selective about online advice

A product that looks impressive in a short video may have been applied with lighting, filters or editing. An influencer's experience also cannot tell you how your skin will respond. Ask what the product is for and whether that problem is relevant to you.

Avoid turning a skin quiz into a judgement about attractiveness. A useful result might say "your answers suggest keeping cleansing gentle". It should not score your face or declare that you are ageing too quickly.

A parent or caregiver can help without taking over

Agree a manageable budget and focus on the essentials. Ask what bothers the teenager rather than assuming that every visible spot needs discussion. A routine works better when it supports comfort and confidence instead of creating more scrutiny.

Products still in development should not be assumed suitable for every age. Check the finished product's directions and age suitability when available. An ingredient being widely used in cosmetics does not, by itself, establish suitability for a child.

The goal is a useful habit: care for skin, protect it from the sun and know when to ask for help. A long routine and an expensive collection are not requirements for healthy self-care.
